A few years ago a magazine article began with that paragraph and I thought my God has it been that long? When I began I could not imagine being thirty, never mind working as an artist and photographer for thirty years. Well the truth is I sold my first series of paintings in 1969 and my first art grant in 1977 (to setup a photography school) so that three decade thing has come and gone.
In all those years I have written many artist statements, some pretty darn good if I do say so myself and some downright embarrassing. I remember one, it was my most quoted about “looking into shadows and peaking round corners”. Like so many things in life it made sense at the time or maybe not. Life is such an interesting journey of change. The underlying truth is not as complicated as I thought it was - I see in pictures, I speak in pictures and I explore in pictures
